Radiation therapy is one of the main treatment methods used in cancer care. This method of treatment can be used as a sole treatment for cancer or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, and/or hormone therapy.

Radiation therapy (sometimes called radiotherapy or irradiation) is the use of high energy waves of particles or x-rays delivered by a machine called a linear accelerator. During treatment, high doses of radiation directed at cancer cells in the body either kill the cells or stop them from growing and dividing. It is a very precise treatment, and as such, any side effects it causes tend to be limited to the area of the body that is being treated. This type of radiation therapy DOES NOT make you radioactive.
The Centre also offers brachytherapy —the delivery of a highly concentrated dose of radiation near or in the tumour, sparing the surrounding healthy tissue — for the treatment of prostate, lung, breast, and other cancer sites.
